Stackexchange (the platform Chiphacker is built on) is moving to version 2.0 (http://blog.stackexchange.com/post/518474918/stack-exchange-2-0)

Good news: It's now free
Bad news: Low traffic sites will be shut down, given 3 months notice.

Not to sound alarmist, but does Chiphacker have enough traffic to survive the move?

I'm delighted to hear it. – Lawrence Johnston Apr 14 at 3:23

Yes, it's a nice manor we've got (beautiful landscapes, manicured lawns, etc.). It's the manner we'll continue in that concerns me. – blalor Apr 14 at 12:29

I think it does. Looking at the front page, 14 topics have activity within the past day. The question I asked 19 hours ago has ~80 views and 4 high quality answers. All have multiple upvotes.

I see no reason that chiphacker should not be merged into one of the new stack-exchange sites as discussed in the following quote from your linked article (for reference, "active" is defined earlier in the article as 10 or more visitors on April 8th, a metric which this site clearly exceeds):

If your site remains very active, we’d love to work with you to migrate it to the new, community-owned Stack Exchange platform. That would be the best thing that could happen to a Stack Exchange 1.0 site, in our opinion: that way your site can take advantage of our existing resources and expansive community.

In short, my initial reaction is that I am optimistic that chiphacker will become the de facto site of its kind after the move.

Re-reading it, 10+ visitors every day just means that the site will be up for atleast a year. I'm not sure what the threshold is for "very active". I'm also optimistic, but the announcement is somewhat vague... – Vineeth Apr 14 at 1:47
You're correct. I actually noted the difference in language and was making the uneducated guess that if 10 visitors on one day was active, then 80 view for one post within 1 day probably qualifies as "very active", but that's unclear from my post. – Lawrence Johnston Apr 14 at 3:22
I am also concerned about the long-term viability/support. It seems unclear as to the direction of SE sites. – Paul Nathan Apr 14 at 20:59
There's some clarification on meta.stackexchange.com stating that it's 10 active users ie those posting questions, answers, comments, votes or edits etc. Not just unique visitors. – Amos Apr 14 at 22:24
That's good information, Amos. Thanks for passing it along. – Lawrence Johnston Apr 15 at 3:40

Although I'm new here, I have a LOT of experience on the mother sites ("SOFU", as they're called), and I think this site will do just fine, as long as the traffic stays about the same or increases.

One of the important factors in the change, I think, will be to focus on getting new visitors to the website. I was actually really surprised to see that chiphacker was only mentioned once on hackaday.com, and in a comment! I sent them a tip to check this out, and hopefully they'll do a piece on chiphacker, helping to drive new traffic.

Edit: I also sent a tweet to @make_tips, and if they re-tweet it, 3000+ followers on Twitter will see it!

Edit 2: Apparently Hack-A-Day has been developing their own Q&A site (which was recently delayed), so they won't be driving any traffic our way.

Good for you for making the effort to get the word out. – Lawrence Johnston Apr 15 at 3:39
